                    Storage Tank Corrosion Challenges

Storage tanks may be exposed to water, condensation, oxygen, chlorides, acidic gases, process chemicals, fuel contaminants, microorganisms, soil conditions, and changing temperatures. Corrosion can develop inside the tank, beneath the floor, between double bottoms, under insulation, or on external surfaces.

Because many affected surfaces are hidden or difficult to inspect, corrosion may continue unnoticed until it causes product contamination, wall or floor thinning, leaks, repairs, environmental concerns, or an unplanned shutdown.

Cortec® VpCI® Solutions for Storage Tanks

Cortec® VpCI® technology uses Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors that diffuse through enclosed spaces and form a protective molecular layer on accessible metal surfaces. This vapor-phase action helps protect recessed areas, internal cavities, tank headspace, interstitial spaces, and irregular surfaces that may be difficult to reach with conventional coatings.

Depending on the application, Cortec® products may be introduced as powders, liquids, fogging treatments, water additives, slurries, direct-applied coatings, emitters, or corrosion-inhibiting packaging.

The proper solution depends on the tank design, stored product, metallurgy, temperature, water content, internal condition, tank-bottom configuration, operating status, and required protection period.

                    Common Storage Tank Applications

                    • Aboveground storage tanks
                    • Single-bottom and double-bottom tanks
                    • Crude oil and petroleum storage tanks
                    • Fuel and aviation-fuel tanks
                    • Diesel and gasoline storage tanks
                    • Lubricating-oil storage tanks
                    • Water and fire-water tanks
                    • Chemical and process storage tanks
                    • Ballast and marine storage tanks
                    • Pressure vessels and process containers
                    • Tank farms and bulk-storage terminals
                    • New tanks awaiting commissioning
                    • Tanks undergoing inspection or repair
                    • Empty tanks placed into temporary shutdown
                    • Long-term tank layup and mothballing

                    Aboveground Storage Tank Bottom Protection

The underside of an aboveground storage tank floor is one of the most difficult areas to inspect and protect. Moisture, chlorides, soil conditions, foundation materials, and contaminants can create a corrosive environment beneath the tank.

Tank floors may not remain in uniform contact with the underlying pad. Irregularities, settlement, welding distortion, and movement caused by filling and emptying can create small voids where moisture and corrosive contaminants accumulate.

CorroLogic® VpCI® systems introduce Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors beneath the tank floor. The inhibitors diffuse through the interstitial space and form a protective molecular layer on accessible soil-side steel surfaces, including areas that may not remain in direct contact with the tank pad.

CorroLogic® Protection for New and Existing Tanks

CorroLogic® can be incorporated into the design and construction of a new aboveground storage tank or installed as part of an existing tank’s corrosion-management program. Available application methods may include CorroLogic® Powder, Slurry, or engineered injection and distribution systems.

For some existing tanks, CorroLogic® materials can be introduced beneath the tank floor through properly designed injection points without raising or emptying the tank. Feasibility depends on tank construction, foundation design, access, operating conditions, and applicable facility requirements.

CorroLogic® installation should be designed and performed by qualified corrosion professionals and authorized applicators.

                    VpCI® and Cathodic Protection

Cathodic protection is commonly used to control soil-side corrosion on aboveground storage tank bottoms. Its effectiveness depends on electrical continuity, system condition, tank-bottom contact, anode performance, current distribution, and monitoring.

Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors may be used as a complementary layer of protection in areas where contact with the cathodically protected pad is uneven or where voids exist beneath the tank floor. VpCI® technology does not require a continuous electrical power source to establish its protective molecular layer.

The relationship between VpCI® treatment and cathodic protection must be evaluated for the specific tank. Neither method eliminates the need for inspection, integrity management, leak detection, or regulatory compliance.

Industry Guidance for Tank-Bottom VCI Protection

Vapor corrosion inhibitor technology for aboveground storage tank bottoms is addressed by industry guidance, including API Technical Report 655, Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors for Storage Tanks. AMPP SP21474-2023 also addresses external corrosion control for on-grade carbon-steel storage tank bottoms.

These documents provide industry context but do not replace tank-specific engineering, regulatory requirements, inspection standards, or the owner’s integrity-management program.

                    Internal Storage Tank Corrosion Protection

Internal corrosion may occur when water, oxygen, salts, sludge, acidic contaminants, or process materials contact the tank wall, floor, roof, internal supports, or other components. Corrosion risk may be especially high at the product-water interface and in the headspace above the stored liquid.

Cortec® offers product-specific corrosion inhibitors for selected fuel, oil, water, brine, and process applications. Certain formulations can provide protection in the liquid phase, at the liquid-vapor interface, and within the tank headspace.

Compatibility with the stored product, tank lining, seals, filtration, downstream process, and applicable regulations must be confirmed before adding any corrosion inhibitor to a storage tank.

                    Tank Headspace and Void-Space Protection

Tank headspace can contain humid air and corrosive vapors that condense on the roof, shell, internal supports, and metal surfaces above the liquid level. Contact-only inhibitors in the stored liquid may not reach these areas.

Cortec® VpCI® fogging fluids and powders can establish a corrosion-inhibiting atmosphere inside compatible empty tanks, void spaces, and enclosed vessels. The inhibitors migrate through the headspace and protect accessible metal surfaces without requiring direct application to every area.

The tank should be sufficiently enclosed to retain the required vapor concentration. Tank volume, internal configuration, ventilation, contamination, temperature, and exposure period must be considered when calculating treatment.

                    Empty Tank Shutdown and Layup

A tank that has been emptied for inspection, maintenance, reduced production, or long-term shutdown can corrode rapidly if moisture and contaminants remain inside. Temperature changes may also create condensation after the tank appears dry.

                    A tank-layup program may include:

                    • Removal of product residue, sludge, and contaminants
                    • Cleaning and treatment of existing rust
                    • Drainage or drying as required
                    • Internal fogging with a compatible VpCI® product
                    • Placement of corrosion-inhibiting powder or emitters
                    • Protection of valves, nozzles, flanges, and manways
                    • Sealing openings to retain the protective atmosphere
                    • Periodic inspection and corrosion monitoring
                    • A documented recommissioning procedure

                    Wet Storage Tank Layup

Some tanks remain filled with water or another compatible fluid during standby. In these applications, the treatment must protect submerged surfaces, the air-water interface, and exposed metal within the headspace.

Cortec® water-treatment products provide options for compatible wet-layup applications. Proper mixing and distribution are important so the inhibitor reaches all areas of the system.

Water chemistry, tank metallurgy, existing coatings, temperature, biological activity, retained fluid, discharge requirements, and planned return to service should be evaluated before treatment.

                    Storage Tank Hydrostatic Testing

Hydrostatic testing introduces water into new, repaired, or inspected tanks. Even after draining, water can remain along floor irregularities, seams, nozzles, supports, and other difficult-to-dry areas.

Cortec® corrosion inhibitors can be added to compatible hydrotest water to help protect ferrous and non-ferrous metals during testing and the period between testing and commissioning. Selected products offer contact and vapor-phase protection.

Product selection depends on water quality, chloride content, hardness, metallurgy, existing coatings, test duration, discharge requirements, and the tank’s final service.

                    Construction and Commissioning Delays

New tanks may remain exposed for months between fabrication, hydrotesting, coating, inspection, and commissioning. Open nozzles, incomplete roofs, rain, salt air, blowing dust, and temperature changes can expose unprotected metal to corrosion.

Temporary protection may include hydrotest additives, internal fogging, VpCI® powder, removable coatings, flange protection, VpCI® packaging, and protective covers. The preservation method should remain compatible with welding, coating, inspection, cleaning, and commissioning requirements.

                    Fuel and Petroleum Storage Tanks

Fuel and petroleum tanks can accumulate water through condensation, product contamination, or operational conditions. Water settling at the tank bottom may contribute to corrosion, sludge formation, and microbial activity.

Cortec® offers product-specific corrosion inhibitor additives for compatible fuel, petroleum, and oil-storage applications. Some formulations provide contact protection within the stored liquid and vapor-phase protection above the fluid level.

Fuel specification, downstream equipment, combustion performance, filtration, seals, coatings, regulatory requirements, and additive approvals must be reviewed before treatment.

                    Water and Fire-Water Storage Tanks

Water-storage and fire-water tanks may remain filled for extended periods. Dissolved oxygen, chlorides, changing water levels, and microbiological activity can contribute to internal corrosion.

Cortec® offers inhibitors for selected industrial-water and fire-water systems. Potable-water tanks require products specifically approved for that use and must comply with all applicable health, water-quality, and facility requirements.

                    Double-Bottom and Interstitial Space Protection

Double-bottom storage tanks contain an enclosed space between the original floor and the replacement or secondary floor. Moisture entering this space may create corrosion on surfaces that are difficult to inspect or coat.

Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors can be introduced into the interstitial space to establish a protective environment. Distribution, sealing, drainage, monitoring points, leak-detection systems, and compatibility with the tank design should be evaluated before application.

Tank Roof, Shell, and External Surface Protection

External tank surfaces are exposed to rain, humidity, sunlight, salt spray, industrial pollutants, and changing temperatures. Roof plates, stairways, handrails, nozzles, fasteners, supports, and other components may require additional corrosion protection during construction or maintenance.

Cortec® offers temporary and longer-term coatings for compatible exterior metal surfaces. Product selection depends on substrate preparation, exposure, ultraviolet resistance, film thickness, appearance, temperature, and required service life.

Temporary coatings should not automatically be considered replacements for permanent tank-coating systems.

Valve, Flange, Nozzle, and Manway Protection

Tank valves, flanges, nozzles, manways, bolts, and gaskets may be exposed during fabrication, shutdown, or maintenance. Machined flange faces are particularly vulnerable because corrosion or pitting can interfere with proper sealing.

Cortec® removable coatings, lubricants, VpCI® films, papers, covers, and protective caps can help preserve these components. Compatibility with gasket materials, stored products, operating temperature, and recommissioning procedures should be confirmed.

Storage Tank Cleaning and Rust Removal

Product residue, sludge, oil, grease, salts, rust, and scale may need to be removed before inspection, repair, coating, or preservation. Cleaning requirements depend on the previous tank contents and the work being performed.

Cortec® offers industrial cleaners, degreasers, rust removers, and scale-removal products for compatible metals and tank applications. Some cleaners contain corrosion inhibitors to help reduce flash rust after cleaning.

Tank entry, cleaning, ventilation, waste handling, confined-space procedures, and atmospheric testing must be performed according to applicable facility and regulatory requirements.

                    Temporary Coatings and Rust Preventatives

Temporary coatings can protect tank components during fabrication, shipment, outdoor staging, maintenance, and shutdown. Cortec® offers water-based, solvent-based, wax-like, removable, oily, and dry-film rust preventatives for different environments.

Products such as VpCI®-368 provide removable protection for harsh outdoor conditions, while VpCI®-391 provides a water-based, dry, non-tacky protective film for compatible metal surfaces.

Storage Tank Parts and Spares Preservation

Tank farms and industrial facilities may keep valves, pumps, seals, gauges, instrumentation, fasteners, and other critical parts in storage. These components must remain protected and ready for maintenance or emergency use.

A preservation program may combine cleaning, rust preventatives, corrosion-inhibiting lubricants, VpCI® films, bags, papers, emitters, foams, and protective caps. Stored items should be labeled with the treatment date, product used, inspection schedule, and removal requirements.

Developing a Storage Tank Corrosion-Control Plan

A storage tank corrosion-control plan should begin with the tank design, metallurgy, service history, stored product, inspection results, foundation, existing coatings, cathodic protection, and environmental conditions.

                    Important considerations include:

                    • Single-bottom or double-bottom construction
                    • Tank floor and foundation condition
                    • Internal lining and external coating systems
                    • Stored product and possible contaminants
                    • Water accumulation and drainage
                    • Tank operating temperature and pressure
                    • Cathodic protection and leak-detection systems
                    • Tank cleaning and confined-space requirements
                    • Application, distribution, and monitoring methods
                    • Inspection and recommissioning procedures

                    Frequently Asked Questions

Where can corrosion occur on a storage tank?

Corrosion may develop on internal walls and floors, in the headspace, beneath the exterior tank bottom, between double bottoms, under insulation, on the roof and shell, or on valves, flanges, nozzles, and related components.

How does VpCI® protect the underside of an aboveground tank?

CorroLogic® products release Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors beneath the tank floor. The vapors diffuse through the interstitial space and form a protective molecular layer on accessible soil-side steel surfaces.

Can CorroLogic® be installed on an existing tank?

In some applications, CorroLogic® material can be introduced beneath an existing tank without raising or emptying it. Feasibility depends on the tank, foundation, access, operating conditions, and engineered application design.

                    Does CorroLogic® replace cathodic protection?

CorroLogic® may be used alone in some engineered applications or as a complementary layer with cathodic protection. The appropriate approach depends on tank design, soil-side conditions, existing systems, inspection data, and regulatory requirements.

Can Cortec® products protect an empty tank during shutdown?

Yes. Compatible tanks may be protected using VpCI® fogging fluids, powders, emitters, coatings, and sealed layup procedures. Cleaning, contamination, internal volume, closure, shutdown duration, and recommissioning must be considered.

Can Cortec® products protect tanks during hydrostatic testing?

Yes. Cortec® offers inhibitors for compatible hydrotest-water applications. Product selection depends on water chemistry, metallurgy, coatings, test duration, discharge requirements, and final tank service.

Can Cortec® products be added directly to stored fuel or oil?

Certain Cortec® additives are designed for compatible fuel, petroleum, and lubricating-oil systems. No product should be introduced without confirming compatibility, concentration, approvals, downstream use, filtration, and applicable regulations.

Can VpCI® protect tank surfaces above the liquid level?

Certain VpCI® products provide vapor-phase protection within enclosed headspace. The inhibitor migrates through the air and forms a protective molecular layer on accessible metal surfaces above the liquid.

Can Cortec® products be used in potable-water tanks?

Only a product specifically approved for potable-water service should be considered. Current product approvals, water-quality regulations, dosage, system materials, and required flushing procedures must be verified.

Can ECORR Systems help select the right storage tank product?

Yes. ECORR Systems can help review the tank design, metallurgy, stored product, tank-bottom configuration, water chemistry, corrosion location, operating status, shutdown duration, and application requirements to identify an appropriate Cortec® solution.
