An antiscalant is a water treatment additive designed to interfere with the formation, growth, or attachment of mineral deposits on surfaces that contact water. These deposits can form when dissolved minerals become concentrated or precipitate because of changes in temperature, pressure, pH, evaporation, or water chemistry.
Antiscalants help keep mineral particles dispersed or reduce their ability to form hard deposits on piping, heat exchangers, cooling towers, boilers, pumps, valves, and other water-system components.
Scale can create an insulating layer between water and heat-transfer surfaces. Even a relatively thin deposit can interfere with heat transfer, increase energy consumption, restrict water flow, and place additional stress on pumps and system components.
Deposits can also create conditions for under-deposit corrosion by trapping moisture and contaminants against the metal surface. If scale is not controlled, it may contribute to higher maintenance costs, chemical cleaning, equipment shutdowns, reduced system efficiency, and premature component replacement.
The composition of a deposit should be evaluated whenever possible because different minerals and operating conditions may require different treatment strategies.
Cortec® offers general-purpose antiscalants, biobased scale-control products, and multifunctional water treatments that combine scale control with corrosion inhibition. Selected products may be used alongside Cortec® VpCI® corrosion inhibitors as part of a broader water treatment program.
Products that combine antiscalant and VpCI® technologies can help address two related but different problems: mineral deposits that restrict system performance and corrosion that attacks metal surfaces.
General-purpose antiscalants are designed to help prevent mineral precipitates from forming or attaching to water-contact surfaces. They may be used with compatible Cortec® corrosion inhibitor formulations when both scale and corrosion control are required.
Selected Cortec® scale-control products incorporate biobased ingredients and are formulated for applications such as cooling towers and open-loop recirculating systems. Environmental characteristics apply to specific formulations and should be verified through current technical documentation.
Multifunctional water treatment products combine scale-control additives with contact and Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors. These products can help protect metal in the liquid phase, at the waterline, and within compatible enclosed system headspaces.
Cooling towers and other open recirculating systems lose water through evaporation, which concentrates dissolved minerals. Products designed for these systems help manage scale formation while selected formulations also provide corrosion protection for ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Certain Cortec® boiler treatment formulations include antiscalant components to help manage mineral deposits while protecting compatible steel and copper surfaces from corrosion. Boiler pressure, operating temperature, feedwater chemistry, and existing treatment programs must be evaluated before use.
Antiscalants are primarily preventative products and generally do not remove established scale. When deposits are already present, a compatible scale remover, cleaner, or system-cleaning procedure may be required before an ongoing preventative treatment program begins.

Scale control and corrosion control are closely related, but they are not the same process. An antiscalant helps prevent dissolved minerals from forming deposits. A corrosion inhibitor helps reduce the chemical or electrochemical attack of water and contaminants on metal.
A product that controls scale should not automatically be assumed to provide adequate corrosion protection. Similarly, a corrosion inhibitor may not provide sufficient scale control unless the formulation includes antiscalant technology. Systems affected by both problems may require a multifunctional product or a compatible treatment combination.
Selecting an antiscalant requires an understanding of the water and the operating system. Important factors include hardness, alkalinity, pH, silica, conductivity, chloride concentration, dissolved solids, temperature, flow rate, evaporation, system volume, metallurgy, and cycles of concentration.
The treatment program should also account for biological control products, corrosion inhibitors, glycol, filtration, discharge requirements, and other chemicals already present in the system. A water analysis is often useful before establishing the product, dosage, and monitoring program.
Antiscalants must be applied at the concentration recommended for the selected product and water conditions. Too little treatment may provide inadequate control, while excessive treatment can increase operating costs or interfere with other system chemistry.
Water chemistry and treatment concentration should be monitored according to the needs of the system. Compatibility with other additives, seals, membranes, coatings, filtration equipment, and downstream processes should be confirmed before use.
