                    Corrosion Challenges in Metalworking Operations

Metal components may be exposed to water, humidity, condensation, fingerprints, machining fluids, cleaning solutions, chlorides, sulfur compounds, and process residues throughout manufacturing. Freshly machined, cleaned, or formed surfaces can be especially vulnerable to flash rust and staining.

Corrosion may develop during machining, between production steps, while parts wait for inspection, or after finished products have been packaged for storage or shipment. Rust can result in rejected parts, surface defects, rework, repolishing, repickling, customer claims, production delays, and unnecessary scrap.

                    Cortec® VpCI® Solutions for Metalworking

Cortec® VpCI® technology helps protect metal surfaces through contact and vapor-phase action. Depending on the formulation, VpCI® products can be added to metalworking fluids, applied directly to components, introduced during cleaning, or incorporated into packaging.

Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors can migrate through enclosed spaces and reach recessed surfaces, internal cavities, tubular components, and other areas that may not receive complete coverage from conventional contact-only treatments.

This allows manufacturers to build corrosion protection into multiple stages of production—from machining and washing through in-process handling, final storage, and export shipment.

                    Common Metalworking Applications

                    Metalworking Fluids and Machining Coolants

Metalworking fluids help cool the workpiece and cutting tool, reduce friction, flush away chips, and support the desired surface finish. However, the fluid must also protect the workpiece, machine, sump, and exposed metal surfaces against corrosion.

Cortec® offers synthetic, semi-synthetic, water-dilutable, and biobased metalworking fluids for compatible cutting, milling, turning, drilling, grinding, stamping, and forming applications. Selected products combine cooling, lubrication, and corrosion protection in one formulation.

Examples include VpCI®-345 for light-duty machining operations, VpCI®-347 for demanding metalworking and stamping applications, and EcoLine® Metalworking Fluid for operations seeking a biobased and biodegradable option.

                    Corrosion Protection During Machining

Newly exposed metal can begin corroding soon after machining if the coolant does not provide adequate rust protection or if the fluid becomes contaminated. Water quality, concentration, pH, microorganisms, tramp oil, metal fines, and fluid age can all influence machining-fluid performance.

Cortec® metalworking fluids and additives can help protect the workpiece and machining equipment from flash corrosion during production. Certain formulations also leave a thin protective film that continues protecting components during temporary storage or movement to the next operation.

                    Metal Forming and Stamping Lubricants

Metal forming, stamping, drawing, and bending operations require lubrication to reduce friction between the workpiece and tooling. Insufficient lubrication can contribute to galling, scoring, heat, surface damage, tool wear, and inconsistent part quality.

Cortec® offers multifunctional products that combine forming lubrication with corrosion protection. These products can help protect stampings, tubular products, formed parts, dies, fixtures, and difficult-to-reach equipment surfaces during production and temporary storage.

Product selection should account for forming severity, metal type, downstream cleaning, welding, painting, heat treatment, and the required surface condition.

                    Metalworking Fluid Additives

Cortec® corrosion inhibitor additives can be incorporated into compatible soluble oils, synthetic fluids, semi-synthetic fluids, hydraulic fluids, cleaners, and other process formulations. These additives help improve protection against flash rust while supporting corrosion control on the workpiece and processing equipment.

Available options include water-soluble, oil-soluble, multi-metal, yellow-metal, vapor-phase, and contact corrosion inhibitor additives. Examples include M-95 for compatible water-based multi-metal systems, M-235 for yellow-metal protection, and M-250 for selected soluble-oil formulations.

Additive selection is formulation-specific. Concentration, pH, foam, emulsion stability, water hardness, biocide compatibility, residue, and downstream processing should be evaluated through appropriate testing.

Parts Cleaning and Flash Rust Protection

Cleaning and degreasing remove machining oils, metal fines, fingerprints, dirt, and process contamination. However, water-based cleaning can leave freshly exposed metal vulnerable to flash rust if the part is not dried or protected quickly.

Cortec® offers cleaners and degreasers containing corrosion inhibitors that help protect compatible metal surfaces during and after cleaning. These products can support parts washing, equipment maintenance, surface preparation, and intermediate cleaning between manufacturing operations.

Cleaning products should be selected according to the soils being removed, substrate metals, wash equipment, temperature, rinsing requirements, wastewater limitations, and subsequent coating or assembly process.

Temporary Rust Preventatives for Finished Parts

Completed metal parts may need corrosion protection while waiting for inspection, assembly, finishing, shipment, or installation. The required protection can range from a few hours on the production floor to months or years in storage.

Cortec® offers water-based, oil-based, solvent-based, biobased, and removable rust preventatives for different indoor and outdoor conditions. VpCI®-377 is a water-based concentrate designed as an alternative to traditional oil-based rust preventatives for compatible equipment and components stored indoors.

Depending on the product, application methods may include spraying, dipping, brushing, rolling, or automated processing. Film thickness, drying, removal, downstream compatibility, and required protection period should be considered before selection.

                    In-Process Corrosion Protection

Work-in-process components frequently remain unprotected between machining, heat treatment, washing, inspection, assembly, and finishing. Production delays, weekends, seasonal humidity, or unexpected shutdowns can extend these hold periods and increase corrosion risk.

Cortec® fluids, rust preventatives, VpCI® papers, films, foams, and emitters can be incorporated into temporary storage procedures. Parts may be dipped or sprayed with a compatible preventative, wrapped in VpCI® paper, placed in VpCI® bags, or stored in enclosed containers with appropriate emitting materials.

Protection for Tubes, Pipes, and Internal Cavities

Tubes, pipes, castings, tanks, and machined components with internal passages can be difficult to protect because conventional coatings may not reach every surface. Moisture trapped inside these spaces can lead to hidden corrosion during storage and shipment.

Cortec® VpCI® products can be applied by dipping, spraying, fogging, or enclosed packaging to help protect internal and external surfaces. The appropriate delivery method depends on the component geometry, metal type, cleanliness, closure, protection period, and return-to-service requirements.

Tool, Die, Mold, and Machine Protection

Dies, molds, fixtures, cutting tools, and machine components represent a significant investment and may remain idle between production runs. Coolant residue, fingerprints, condensation, and humid storage conditions can cause rust on precision surfaces.

Cortec® cleaners, rust preventatives, lubricants, and VpCI® packaging can help protect tooling during operation, maintenance, changeovers, short-term shutdowns, and long-term storage. Removability and compatibility with the next production process should be considered when selecting a product.

                    VpCI® Packaging for Metal Parts

Finished parts may encounter humidity, condensation, salt air, and changing temperatures during warehousing and transportation. Cortec® VpCI® packaging creates a corrosion-inhibiting environment around the metal without requiring complete coverage with heavy oil or grease.

Available options include VpCI® films and bags, corrosion-inhibiting papers, foams, emitters, pouches, barrier materials, and shrink films. These products can protect individual components, layered parts, bulk bins, pallets, crates, and large machinery.

A complete packaging system should account for cleaning, part temperature, residual process fluids, metal type, package volume, barrier integrity, cushioning, moisture exposure, shipping method, and storage duration.

                    Multi-Metal Protection

Metalworking operations may process carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, galvanized steel, aluminum, copper, brass, zinc, and other alloys within the same facility. A product suitable for one metal may stain, tarnish, or provide inadequate protection for another.

Many Cortec® products are designed for multi-metal protection, while others are formulated for specific ferrous or non-ferrous metals. Metal compatibility should always be verified for the complete combination of workpiece, tooling, equipment, and downstream process.

Yes. EcoLine® Metalworking Fluid and other selected EcoLine® products incorporate biobased materials and provide environmentally responsible options for compatible machining and metalworking operations. Product-specific attributes should be confirmed in the current technical documentation.

Can VpCI® packaging replace rust preventative oil?

VpCI® packaging can reduce or eliminate the need for heavy rust preventative oils in many properly cleaned and enclosed storage or shipping applications. The correct approach depends on the metal, contamination, protection period, package integrity, and environmental exposure.

Do Cortec® products need to be removed before painting or welding?

Removal requirements vary by product and downstream operation. Some protective films may be compatible with certain processes, while others must be cleaned from the surface. Product data and process testing should be reviewed before painting, welding, plating, bonding, or heat treatment.

Can ECORR Systems help select the right metalworking product?

Yes. ECORR Systems can help review the machining or forming process, metals, existing fluid, water quality, application equipment, corrosion exposure, downstream operations, storage period, and packaging requirements to identify an appropriate Cortec® solution.
